Table Rules

Crazy Eights — 4 players, no partnerships

  • Each player is dealt 5 cards. The rest form a face-down stock, and the top card is turned up to start the discard pile.
  • On your turn, play a card matching the discard's rank or the active suit — or play any 8, which is always wild.
  • Playing an 8 lets you name the active suit, including the one already active. The printed suit on the 8 does not change.
  • You may draw one card even when you have a legal play. If you have no legal play, you draw until something playable appears.
  • If the stock runs out, the discard pile is reshuffled beneath its top card to make a new stock. You pass only when there is genuinely nothing left to draw and nothing you can play.
  • Be first to empty your hand. You score 0 for that hand; everyone else scores penalty points for the cards still in their hand.
  • Penalties: each 8 is 50, each face card 10, each Ace 1, and every other card its own pip value.
  • If the stock is gone and every player passes in turn, or 40 turns pass with no hand getting smaller, the hand is blocked: whoever holds the lowest-value hand scores 0, and everyone else scores the cards still in their hand.
  • The game ends when any player reaches 100 points, and the lowest score wins. Players tied on the lowest score share the win.
