Description

Gin Rummy is a fast, tactical game for exactly two players. The aim is to organise your cards into sets and runs while reducing your deadwood, the total point value of cards that do not belong to any valid meld.

Each player holds 10 cards, briefly increasing to 11 after drawing. You must then decide whether to discard, continue improving your hand or knock once your deadwood reaches 10 points or fewer. Getting to zero deadwood produces Gin, while arranging all 11 cards into melds produces the rare and especially valuable Big Gin.

Compared with slower, multiplayer Rummy variants, Gin Rummy rewards quick decisions and close attention to every draw and discard. In this version, you compete against a single AI opponent in a race to 100 points.

## Gin Rummy Strategy Tips

* **Do not knock automatically at 10 deadwood.** Reaching the knock threshold gives you the option to end the hand, but knocking with borderline deadwood can be risky. If your opponent has equal or lower deadwood after an ordinary knock, they undercut you and take the round in their favour.

* **Consider pushing beyond an ordinary knock.** Reaching Gin means all 10 cards remaining after your discard form complete melds. It scores more than a normal knock and prevents the opponent from undercutting you. Big Gin is even more valuable, using all 11 cards in valid melds and awarding a 31-point bonus.

* **Watch which discards your opponent collects.** Taking a visible discard often reveals information about the sets or runs an opponent may be building. Avoid feeding them nearby cards unless doing so substantially improves your own hand.

* **Learn from the cards they reject.** An opponent’s discards can indicate which ranks or suits they no longer need. This can help you judge which cards are safer to release and which combinations they may still be pursuing.

* **Be careful with high-value unmatched cards.** Keeping one can be worthwhile if it is close to completing a strong meld. If the required cards fail to appear, however, its value remains part of your deadwood and could make knocking difficult or leave you vulnerable at the end of the hand.

## Gin Rummy FAQ

### What is deadwood in Gin Rummy?

Deadwood is the total point value of the cards in your hand that are not included in a valid set or run. It is calculated from the best possible arrangement of your cards and can change whenever you draw or discard.

### What’s the difference between a knock, Gin and Big Gin?

An ordinary knock is allowed when your deadwood is 10 points or fewer. Gin means that 10 of your 11 cards form complete melds, leaving one loose card to discard and exactly zero deadwood. Big Gin means that all 11 cards form valid melds, with nothing left to discard.

### What is an undercut?

An undercut occurs after an ordinary knock when the other player has deadwood equal to or lower than the knocker’s. The round’s score and bonus then go to the defending player instead. Undercuts do not apply when a player ends the hand with Gin or Big Gin.

### How many players does Gin Rummy need?

Gin Rummy requires exactly two players. In this version, you play against a single AI opponent.

### What score do I need to win?

The first player to reach 100 points wins the game. The total is accumulated over a series of hands rather than decided by a single round.

### When does the knock option become available?

You can knock after drawing when the unmatched cards in your best possible hand arrangement have a combined deadwood value of 10 points or fewer. You may also continue playing if you think you can improve the hand further.
