Punto Banco is the version of Baccarat most commonly played in casinos, and it is far simpler than its formal image might suggest. Before the cards are dealt, you bet on which hand will win: Player, Banker or Tie. Those are simply the names of the two hands and do not mean that you are playing against the dealer. Once your bet is placed, the entire round runs automatically. There is no decision to hit, stand or manage the cards, making Baccarat a game of pure chance with no choices to second-guess.
The game uses an eight-deck shoe. Player and Banker initially receive two cards each, and each hand is valued using only the last digit of its total. For example, a 7 and an 8 add up to 15, but the Baccarat value of that hand is 5. Tens and picture cards count as zero, while Aces count as one.
If either hand has a total of 8 or 9 from its first two cards, it has what is known as a “natural”. Both hands stand immediately and the round is settled without any more cards being drawn. Otherwise, fixed third-card rules decide whether Player and Banker receive another card. These rules cannot be changed by the player or dealer.
A winning Player bet pays 1:1. The Banker bet wins slightly more often because the drawing rules give it a small mathematical advantage, so a 5% commission is deducted from Banker winnings, producing a 0.95:1 payout. Tie bets pay 8:1, while optional Player Pair and Banker Pair side bets pay 10:1.

Choose Player, Banker or Tie
Every round begins by choosing one of three bets: Player, Banker or Tie. Player and Banker are simply the names of the two hands, so betting on Player does not mean you receive or control that hand. Your only decision for the round is which result you think will occur.
How Baccarat Hands Are Valued
The aim is to finish closer to 9 than the other hand. Add the card values together, but keep only the last digit of any total above 9. For example, a 7 and an 8 total 15, so the hand is worth 5.
Aces count as 1, cards from 2 to 9 keep their face value, and 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings count as zero. This unusual scoring system is important because a hand containing two high cards is not necessarily strong.
What Is a Natural?
A total of 8 or 9 from the first two cards is called a natural. If either Player or Banker has a natural, both hands stand and the round ends immediately.
A natural 9 beats a natural 8. If both hands have the same total, the result is a tie.
Automatic Third-Card Rules
If there is no natural, the game checks whether either hand must receive a third card. Player generally draws with a low total and stands with a higher one. Banker follows a fixed table based on its own total and, in some cases, Player’s third card.
You do not need to memorise these rules. They are applied automatically and cannot be changed by either the player or the dealer. This is why Baccarat involves no hand-management decisions after the initial bet.
Banker Bet and the 5% Commission
A winning Banker bet pays 0.95:1 rather than even money. For example, a £10 winning bet produces £9.50 in profit, with the original £10 stake also returned.
The reduced payout reflects the fact that Banker wins slightly more frequently due to the fixed drawing rules. A 5% commission keeps that small mathematical advantage from producing an even-money payout.
Tie Bets and Pushes
A winning Tie bet pays 8:1. Although the larger payout may look attractive, ties occur much less frequently than Player or Banker wins.
When a round ends in a tie, bets on Player and Banker push. This means those bets are returned rather than lost.
Player Pair and Banker Pair Side Bets
The optional Player Pair and Banker Pair side bets pay 10:1 when the selected hand’s first two cards have the same rank, such as two 7s or two Kings. Only the original two cards count, so a third card cannot complete a pair.
Because there are no playing decisions to make, Baccarat “strategy” is really about understanding the odds behind each available bet. Statistically, Banker offers the best odds of the three main bets, even after accounting for its 5% commission.
